Barely Legal

I'm going away for a couple of days so I just wanted get in early and say a very happy birthday to my wee brother James, who turns 18 on Sunday. I am sure it was only yesterday he was a screaming baby but now he's over six feet tall and almost officially adult. He has the most compelling MySpace page ever, even though it makes me feel like I am seven hundred years old. It contains words like "crew" and "bitches" and never fails to crack me up. Happy Birthday tiger. You are a legend. 🙂 . . . Can I ask a question for an Aussies out there? Where do you do your online shopping these days? For books, music, or groovy presents in general. I am out of touch but I'd like to know where I can get the goods for folks back home. And if you're not Australian… hmmm… a question for you so no one feels left out. Ummm. What colour are your undies today? What are you doing on the weekend? Oooh, two questions!

  1. I don’t quite remember how I ended up on your page, but I’ve been reading the archives and I love them! Plus, great way to pretend I’m doing homework. To answer your questions, 1) black and 2) teaching Austrians how to throw a Halloween party.

  2. http://www.fishpond.com.au/ is good for cheap books, as in, once you account for the cost of international shipping they sometimes beat having Amazon ship from the US (and it’s always faster).

There’s a bunch of places that do DVDs. I usually check http://www.ezydvd.com.au/ and http://www.dvdorchard.com.au/ to see who is cheaper. Sometimes I just buy people vouchers for http://www.quickflix.com.au/ (Netflix-alike in Australia) instead.

http://www.hmv.com.au/ and http://www.sanity.com.au/ do standard-ish music and DVDs, and http://www.redeye.com.au/ is a good place (although not cheap as such) for imports and rarities.

Now, what are the odds of getting this past your spam filter with all those URLs in it?

  3. When I was an ‘antipodean’ I used to use http://www.wishlist.com.au as they were really cheap with the mightly pound.
Since this was at the beginning of the eCommerce era, i don’t know if there is anything else. I tend to buy lots from Amazon in the UK still and find even with the postage cheaper than Oz.

  4. 1) Nuddy-pants and 2) I’m baking cookies for the local Fall carnival/Halloween party. Gotta love Halloween! BOO!!!

  5. Vibrant blue (not the boring sort) and working and sleeping.

Shauna – are you going to discover the joys of Guy Fawkes? Us NZers do Guy Fawkes but it doesn’t seem to be an Aussie thing – therefore England (and Scotland??) should be quite interesting in November.

Bloody hell, my little sister is 31! Eeek – chronologically anyway!

    S 🙂

  6. It’s not specifically Australian but I have eben buying lots of things at Etsy http://www.etsy.com/index.php the last year or so. delivery and that varies according to whom you buy from but it is a nice site to find something a bit different. I have once or twice emailed the person I’m buying from and asked them if they would be willing to gift wrap the item and send it to an address in Australia and I would pay a couple of dollars for the extra effort. They have always said yes. The items I’ve bought have been made in the States, Denmark, Spain, ……. Not sure if it’s what you’re looking for but I recommend a good browse.

  7. Black, and I’m overloading on Body Pump, Body Jam, and Body Combat at the gym; eeeeee! (Oh… and there’s study and watching cricket in there too)

Oh yeah, like Scott F said, Guy Fawkes – blowing things up!

  8. Grey and getting blottoed because my housemates won’t be home so its Me time!

I just used http://www.bookworm.com.au and they were brilliant – only place in Australia I found a book that was released 1 year ago in paperback – trust me, I tried _everywhere_.

  9. Black
Sitting in the hospital with my youngest son hoping he gets discharged.
I didn’t even know you had a brother.

  10. the yellow one with the pink dots my mother disapproved of as so very childish when we met up a month ago – for the first time in 7 years.

and I’m gonna pick me up a car, a car, a car!!! pushbike riding loses its charm in horizontal rain.

  11. Well I kinda am and kinda ain’t.

I’m a Scot who’s a permenant resident of Oz, b ut is currently in England.

So I will just answer everything and will even ask a question.

Ebay for stuff and Amazon for books and cds.

Dabs for PC stuff and that’s it.

    Oh Black M&S.

Here’s my Question for any Aussies.

When away form Oz for a long time, is there any source for buying BONDS undies and BONDS t shirts.

Undercrackers here a re a little snug…round the front.

    Damn this benighted Isle.

    All lthe best etc

  12. Black M&S as well.

Volunteering for a conservation group – which means getting to use a chain saw… Woo Hoooooo!

  13. Sadly, I mostly buy sports and bodybuilding supplements online, and I don’t suppose they make the best gifts. Unless your rellies are into that sort of thing.

I do however occasionally buy something nice and gift-ish from Lush: http://lush.com.au/catalog/home.php

Oh, and sometimes the good old SBS shop for books, CDs and DVDs:
    http://www.sbs.com.au/sbsshop/

And even though I’m an Aussie, my undies are boring old white today. *pouts* Ask me tomorrow when I have my Saturday undies on….

  14. I didn’t know you had a brother either! His page cracked me up too, mostly because it is so similar to my 20 year old brother’s page.

Black and flying up to San Francisco for my niece’s 1st Birthday. How cute!

  15. 1) Going commando today ….. yeah, right – like I’m going to tell complete strangers about my underwear habits!

    2) I’m going to tour the Tabasco factory in New Iberia and get some great boudin. For those who don’t know anything about Louisiana culture and have a dirty mind, boudin is not a sexual term, but is instead a great cajun food. It is pronounced boo-dan and should be eaten as often as possible.

  16. 1. pink
    2. going on a date with a flair bartender…

my life has never been more exciting. My knickers definitely have been though.

  17. I am wearing red boxers today. They have crunched up several times — in one case, trapping my scrotum into the northwestern corner of my crotch (this from a view looking down, as if my crotch area is a circular compass). Unfortunately, the scrotum trapping happened while I was walking. And I was with people. So through careful subterfuge, a move involving drawing these other people’s attention to a substandard car speeding by, I untrapped my scrotum. The process, however, was far from complete. And it took a two minute trip to the bathroom stall to ensure that my scrotum would be comfortable and untrapped for the rest of the day.

I suspect this all came about because I was in a hurry when I left my apartment. Let this be a lesson to you boxer wearers! When pleated in a strange spot, it can create a small but interesting annoyance.

As for the weekend plans, there is a birthday party, a lot of reading, and possibly the consumption of alcohol. I’m also meeting up with another writer (maybe) to work on stuff. This writer is unaware of my crotch mishap, but, if asked, I will be sure to tell her of the dangers, so that she may better understand the relationship between men’s underwear and testicles.

  18. hi DG

Saw your brothers myspace–he looks a little like you from what I could see from under that shnazzy hat.

    As for shopping–no idea.
And as for nickers–are they still in fashion?? I didn’t know. 😀

  19. White. The ironing.

I’ve just read your train conductor post with my Higher English class (hope this is still ok with you) as an example of good writing and they liked it a lot. Thanks for being my lesson!

  20. Happy Birthday to James! I too remember his baby stage, the toddler stage ….would love to see the ‘barely legal’ as well…may his life’s journey be a great one.

    Undies are plum and lace.

Weekend – recovery from three day conference in Sydney….too much learning!
Did ferris wheel at Luna Park (not in same class as London Eye but I did stand up ’cause I could), singing in full voice ‘With or Without You’ at the Orient pub as well as as ‘I can’t tell you about that events’….hope you enjoy your days away.
    love always
    Mothership

  21. The remo site has some interesting stuff for presents. The Peters of kensington has ordinary stuff, but an enormous range and very cheap postage.

  22. Hey Shauny! Garth here. Not sure if you remember me, but I couldn’t help but think of you when I saw that NaNoWriMo was fast approaching. I am considering dipping my oar into the water once more, though I still have more than enough time to puss out.

Anyway, hope things are going well, and all of that. *wave*

  23. scott f – i haven’t ever done anything guy fawksey but have listened to the neighbours letting of crackers…

garethmeister j! why helloooo! lovely to hear from you comrade. i am thinking of nano-ing myself!

    you didn’t mention your undies!

and hello to everyone else, thank you for that up close and personal info. another vote for simple M&S black undies here. hehe.

thanks for all the shopping suggestions too 🙂

and yep i do have a bro, technically a half-bro from my dad’s second marriage but i don’t believe in making fractions out of people 🙂

  24. I knew you had a brother – this is definitely not his first appearance. His MySpace page just about gave me a heart attack, though. Maybe the volume on my computer is turned up too loud.

Oh. White, boring (but M&S). And I made some banana bread, which I’m insanely proud of. It worked.

  25. 1) pink (teehee) and 2) the weekend is over I had a long distance rendevous that was blast!

But my gripe is the damn yankess have apparently banned vegemite. I am not sure I can get it with out having relatives just send it over. I had heard a rumor and then when I went into the Aussie store where I usually get it they had none! SOB! What about my toast!?

  26. Since I can be of no help whatsoever with the main question I will answer the consolation questions: 1) mauve and 2) Raking leaves and stringing up the exterior Christmas lights (I won’t be turning the lights on until after Thanksgiving, but I like to put them up before the ice and snow make crawling around on the roof problematic)

  27. Sorry Shauna, just catching up on Blogs.

Try dealsdirect.com.au. They have a huge range of stuff.

Oh yeah, white bonds undies and I’ve been loading stuff onto Ebay today.
